Strengths and Weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution that was made by the U.S. on November 15, 1777. There were many positive things about this first constitution, but there were also negative things, which was why it was replaced by the United States Constitution there is today. Some of the Pros were that :
1) It was able to handle foreign affairs
2) It had the power to declare wars, alliances, and treaties.
3) Congress took care of all the Native American problems.
4) It said that you could make a new state, as long as they had a population of 60,000 or more.
5) It encouraged the cooperation between different states, and to make peace with them.
Some of the Cons were:
1) It said nothing about the U.S. having a national army or navy.
2) All the states had their own different type of paper money, and that would be very confusing between all the trading and moving from one state to another.
3) Even though all states have different sizes, each state only go one vote!
4) The laws didn't have to be followed, along with the taxes, because they couldn't be enforced.
5) They also had no national courts.
Overall, there were many good positive traits, but, the negative traits would have caused too much of a major chaos to daily life, money, and law. So, it couldn't have been alright to pass this flawed constitution.
