The Andersonville Prison
This horrible and gruesome prison was located in Andersonville, GA. It was a prison camp for Union soldiers. The Union and Confederate used to switch back prisoners, but soon, that came to an end. The prison was meant to hold about 100, 000 prisoners. But it ended up holding many more prisoners than planned. Since the Confederate could barley have enough food for their troops, they didn't have any for the prisoners. They lived in unsanitary conditions, and had no food or water. The pisoners were basically walking skeletons. The prisoner caretaker, Henry Wirtz begged to have better conditions for them, but he was ignored. After the war was over, Wirtz was hanged for his "excessive cruelty towards the men in prison. There were about 13,000 soldiers that died in that camp.
