Chief Tomochichi
Chief Tomochichi was the leader of the Yamacraw Indians. He was born in 1644 and died in 1739. When Oglethorpe and some settlers went to go find a place to start their colony, they saw the perfect place, Yamacraw Bluff. But, that bluff belonged to the Yamacraw Indians. When Oglethorpe met Tomochichi, Oglethorpe persuaded him to let them Settle in Yamacraw Bluff. Soon, Tomochichi and Oglethorpe became best friends. The Savannah settlers and the Yamacraw Indians traded with each other and provided help in troubled times. Oglethorpe even took Tomochichi and some of the tribe members to England to make peace with the Yamacraw Indians. When he died he insisted being buried in Savannah next to all his British friends so that he could always be next to them. To this day, there is a granite tome stone that is where is final resting place is.
