James Oglethorpe
In 1732, King George gave Oglethorpe a piece of land to create a new colony; called Georgia. It was colonized to have 2 purposes: to be a barrier against the Spanish, and it allowed debtors that were in prison to start a new life. A year later in 1733, a group of settlers joined Oglethorpe to found Savannah, Georgia. Although they didn't plan to have a lot of land and slavery, plantations and slavery became a big part of Georgia when it became a royal colony in 1752. Georgia was the first group of states that ratified the new constitution at the end of the revolutionary war.
