The Charter of 1732
First of all, a charter is a legal document or contract that grants rights and privileges. On June 7, 1732, King George the third gave a royal charter to Oglethorpe. They used the charter to start the colonization in Georgia. But...they charter had a few regulations for the new colonists follow. First of all, the colonists couldn't own slaves. They thought that slavery would be bad for the new colony. Second, they had to grow mulberry bushes. King George wanted Mulberry bushes to help grow silkworms to made silk to sell. Another big regulation was that no Catholics were allowed in Georgia. They thought that Catholics wouldn't be loyal to England and they would side with Spain or led bad things happen in Georgia. Women couldn't inherit land, and the land owners couldn't sell their land either. So, when a wife's husband died, they women wouldn't be able to keep the land, so then they would be homeless. These limits in freedom angered many of the colonist, and created the malcontents.
