Impact of European Exploration
32b - evaluate the impact of European contact on Native American cultures including Spanish missions along the barrier islands, and the exploration of Hernando DeSoto
The European exploration made a huge impact of the Indians lives and their homes. First of all, when Hernando Cortez found the Aztec territory in 1518, Cortez wanted all their gold. The leader/chief of the Aztecs was Montezuma. He and all of his village was killed by the Europeans in war and all the diseases that the Europeans brought over. The Aztec city was destroyed, and all the gold and treasures were taken. A few years later, Francisco Pizzaro conquered the Incas and took their emperor as hostage. Later, they executed the Incan Emperor. Just like Cortez, Pizzaro took all of the gold and riches. And last but not least, Hernando Desoto and about 600 men marched into present day Albany. Many of the Indians were very intimidated by their weapons and their unknown objects. Like Cortez and Pizzaro, many of the Indians died from diseases and war. Overall, the exploration of the Europeans wasn't very good when it came to the death rate and bloodshed.
Spanish missions were religious groups that set up in certain parts of a state or new land to spread the religion of Spain.
There was also a man named Hernando de Soto. He was a Spanish explorer; born in about 1500, and he was the first European explorer to explore the center or the interior of present Georgia. De Soto helped conquer the Incas with Pizzaro around the 1530's when he was about 30 years old. But he soon became restless, and he went to North America to find gold and enslave the Native Americans, and he explored the Southeastern part of the United States for the next 3 years. HE continued to move southwest, and ended up also discovering the Mississippi River. But, Hernando de Soto's mission was considered a failure because he couldn't find any gold, and died on the expedition. De Soto died near the banks of the Mississippi River after he caught a fever on May21, 1542 in Ferriday, Louisiana.
But, there was one very important (good and bad) influence of European exploration. The Columbian Exchange was a global exchange of goods and ideas. It started with the voyage of Christopher Columbus. Some of the goods that were exchanged were:
Food: Livestock: Diseases:
-Squash -Horses -Smallpox -Malaria
-Avocado -Pigs -Influenza -Whooping Cough
-Tomato -Cows -Typhus
-Maize -Sheep -Measles
-Potatoes
-Turkey
-Pineapples
-Peanuts
-Tobacco
-Beans
-Corn
-Vanilla
-Sweet Potatoes
-Pumpkin
-Onions
-Sugar Cane
-Peppers
-Coffee Beans
