Key Features of Georgia
Some key physical features of Georgia are the Fall Line, the Okefenokee Swamp, The Chattahoochee River, The Savannah River, barrier islands, and the Appalachian Mountains.
The Fall line is a geological boundary that's about t20 miles wide, and runs from Columbus to Augusta. It used to be the Mesozoic Periods, ocean shoreline, and separates the Upper coastal Plains, and the Piedmont Region. It is basically a barrier for navigation.
The Appalachian Mountains are the oldest mountain chains in North America. They are made up of mountains, ridges and valleys. The name came from the Appalachee Indians.
The Barrier islands are small islands that are in the coast of Georgia. They are 12 islands in total: Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Cumberland Island, Little Cumberland Island, Little Tybee Island, Ossabaw Islands, Little St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Sapelo Island, St. Catherines Island, and Wassaw Island. These 12 islands prevent erosion of the mainland from wind, water, and sand.
The Okefenokee swamp is a 438,000 acre wetland located near the border between Georgia and Florida. It is the largest 'black water' swamp located in North America. The word Okefenokee means " Land of Trembling Earth." in Indian. It is known as one of The Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. Some of the animals that inhabit there are: The Black Bear, Otter, Water Moccasin, Alligators, and Anhinga.
Next key physical feature is the Chattahoochee River. It is about 434 miles in total. It means " River of painted rocks" in Indian. It probably is referring to the colorful rocks along the bank of the river. The source of the river is a tiny spring below the Appalachian Trail. The Chattahoochee River is a main water supply for metro Atlanta. It supplies 70% of the water to Metro Atlanta! What would we do without that river??
Last but not least, is the Savannah River. It is located eastern Georgia, and southern South Carolina. It defines the boundary between South Carolina and Georgia. It provides water to drink, jus like the Chattahoochee, except that it provides water for Augusta and Savannah, not metro Atlanta. Those are the key physical features of the state Georgia!
