Reasons for Colonizing Georgia
There were 3 total reasons for Georgia colonization. Charity, economics, and defense. Charity, was because Oglethorpe wanted to find a way to be able to get the debtors out of prison so that they could start a new life, and pay back their debts from Georgia. Georgia was a place for the poor to prosper. James Oglethorpe thought of this idea because as the unemployment rate went up, too many people were going to jail for either not being able to pay their debts off, or stealing food to keep their family from starving. One of Oglethorpe's close friends, John Castell, died in jail from the unsanitary conditions. That is why Oglethorpe decided to save the poor and give them the charity that they needed. Second, economics, was because King George wanted Georgia to be like South Carolina and prosper. The plan was that GA was to grow crops and send to England to get money. Lastly, was defense. Spain was always a threat to England, because they were afraid that the Spanish would invade South Carolina to take all the riches. So England wanted GA to be a "buffer" colony between South Carolina and Spain.
