Savannah, Georgia
Savannah was laid out and planned by James Oglethorpe's late friend, John Castell. Castell planned out savannah so that the land was divided into 4 squares, and each square had 10 houses. ( Shown in the picture above.) This city was the first planned out city in the New World. Savannah was located in the Yamacraw Bluff. It was a refuge for the poor and the people who had to pay debts. But sadly, none of the debtors were released from prison, since the person the debtor owe money to and to sign a paper allowing them to go to GA and pay off their debt. But the debtors wanted them to be in prison until their debts were paid off. Savannah was supposed to be a place for the debtors to find a refuge and pay off their depts., but many artisans filled on the places of the 125 original settlers. Each person/family received a plot of land, and the seeds and the farming equipment. There were many bad factors about the new colony; not to mention the malcontents. One factor was the weather and the soil/land. Oglethorpe dreamed of this place being a paradise and letting the place thrive for England. But what happened was actually the opposite. What happened was that many of the setters died from the heat and the humidity of GA. And to add to the suffering, the soil wasn't fit to grow many of the crops that England intended for GA to grow. The regulations only added to the suffering of the people. What was formed were the malcontents. They were very, very unhappy people that objected to the regulations of the GA colony. They thought that alcohol and slavery was essential to the growth of GA. When they looked to their South Carolina neighbors and noticed their flourishing government and became very upset. The only success that GA had was that it defended South Carolina against the Spanish. Otherwise, GA couldn't be a place for debtors, provide a good economic gold mine for England.
After GA became a royal colony, slavery was soon allowed, since the Georgians complained about the unfair rules of non-slavery. After the slavery was allowed, all of the colonist owned slaves. Slaves were thought to be property, a d weren't treated as people. They didn't get a say in what to do, how to act, and they were treated very poorly.
