Franklin Deleno Roosevelt
Franklin Roosevelt was the 32nd president of United States. He was born on January 30, 1882 into a very wealthy family. His family had been promoted for several generations, and made a lot of fortune in real estate and trade. He was the only child of James and Sarah Ann Roosevelt. THey lived in Springwood, in their estate in New York. All throughout his early life, he was gorwn up around privilege and self-importance. He was tutored until he ws 14, and his mother was a very important role model in his life, even as he got older. His upbringing was different than other people. He preffered to please his teachers, and was very interested with his one teacher, Endicott Peabody.
Roosevelt graduated from this schol in 1900, then entered Hravard Univresity. Although he was a C student, he entered the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity and the Harvard Crimson. He was able to graduate in 3 years. In his last year of Harvard, he became engaged to his fifth cousin. He was the niece of his role model, Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the U.S. Eleanor and Franklin were married on March 17, 1905.
Franklin entered Columbia University of Law and passed the bar exam two years later. But he didn't get a degree. For the next three years, he lived the typical upper-class life of comfort. But he was bored and uninterested in law. He wanted something more exciting. In 1910, he was invited to run for the New York Senate. He went against family tradition and ran as a Democrat in a district that had a record of a Republican party winning for the last 32. He was able to campaign hard and win the election due to his name and a Democratic landslide. This won him a lot of party leaders, but it also gained him a lot of political knowledge. He formed a political alliance Louis Howe, a man who shaped his political life for the next 25 years. During the national Democratic election in 1912, he supported President Woodrow Wilson and was rewarded and became the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. It was the same job that his role model, Theodore had, and raised himself up as president. Franklin became a diligent and efficient administrator. As he slowly went up the food chain, eh learned and gained personal and professional success.
But in 1914, he developed a relationship with Eleanor's social secretary. That relationship blossomed into a love affair. In 1918, (4 years later!) Eleanor found out and made Franklin make the choice to either stop seeing Lucy, or have a divorce. franklin agreed to stop seeing Lucy, but still met her secretly over the years.
While vacationing in Campobello Island , New Brunswick, Canada, eh was contracted with a disease called polio. People said that his political career was over. Franklin's mother told him to quit his job, and just rest. But Franklin was determined to do what he loved. He soon found the Warm Springs in GA. It helped him improve the condition of his legs.
Louis Howe urged him to run as president. He became president when he sensed a chance in the election. People were blaming the Republicans for the Great Depression. He called for a provide of relief from the government, and people liked his happy, upbeat personality. He was able to beat the former president Herbert Hoover, who did nothing during the Great Depression. By the time Roosevelt took office in March, 13 million Americans were unemployed and hundreds of banks were closed. In his first 100 days, FDR proposed an economic reform, calling it the "New Deal." He ordered a temporary stop to all trains, a stop in all banks, and more. He created programs that helped the people in need. He created things like the AAA or and CCC. It was the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, and the Civilian Conservation Corps. And by 1936, the economy was already showing signs of improvement.
He was also the president during WW2. He created the lend-lease act, and Germany and the Axis powers declared war on the U.S., saying that they were no longer neutral because they were providing the Allied Powers supplies.
